Project Name: Evaluation of Color Removal Alternatives for Municipal WWTP with Textile Dyeing and Finishing Loadings

Description: A city WWTP received approximately 70 percent of its flow from textile dyeing and finishing plants in a highly colored discharge to the Smith River. Proposed effluent limits for color required that color levels be reduced to 200 ADMI. Extensive laboratory and on-site pilot studies were performed at the wastewater treatment plant and at the industrial sites to determine the most effective method for color removal. Chemical coagulation, activated carbon adsorption, electrochemical coagulation, ozonation, chlorine dioxide, hyperchlorination and biological processes were evaluated. Although several processes demonstrated adequate color removal, chemical coagulation was determined to be the most cost effective.
