Description: The client manufactures flush values which are electroplated using chromium and nickel. Laboratory studies were performed to determine optimal treatment for the reduction of hexavalent chromium and the precipitation of chromium (III) and nickel hydroxides. Based on these studies, full scale facilities were designed and placed into operation for the batch treatment of 20,000 gpd. The process included pH reduction, chromium (VI) reduction using sodium bisulfite and co-precipitation of chromium (III) and nickel by hydroxide addition. Sludge storage was provided for intermittent disposal. However, on-site pilot studies were performed demonstrating the feasibility of hydroxide sludge dewatering using a recessed plate filter press.
