Project Details

Project Name: Limited Sampling
Country: None Listed
Description: Underground storage tank system used by a service station previously located on an adjacent property and the possibility that waste materials from the service station may have been buried in fill material on the BRHCA site. Conducted Limited Phase II Soil Sampling to address these concerns. The limited Phase II investigations consisted of drilling one soil boring to the bottom of the fill area near the top of the slope, and a hand auger boring down gradient from the soil boring along the toe (base) of the slope. The soil boring was drilled using 5 foot sections of 6 inch (outside diameter) hollow stem augers. The hand auger boring was drilled using a hand held stainless steel auger. The soil samples were analyzed for total petroleum hydrocarbons (TPH); benzene, toluene, ethyl benzene, and xylenes (BTEX, the main constituents of gasoline); polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs); total organic halogens (TOX); and Toxicity Characteristic Leaching Procedure for metals known as TCLP Metals (Arsenic, Barium, Cadmium, Chromium, Lead, Mercury, Silver, and Selenium). These analyses were selected to screen the soil samples for indications of contamination that may have resulted from activities conducted at a service station that was previously located on an adjacent property. Based on the results, the soil samples were contaminated with low levels of TPH and TOX. It was recommended that the owner carefully monitor for any indications of soil contamination during any site excavation activities, and that the owner take the necessary steps to react appropriately should any contamination or anything foreign be encountered.
