Project Details

Project Name: IAQ Assessment
Country: USA
Description: Provided an IAQ assessment of a high school classroom area where building occupants had complained of headaches and respiratory problems. The survey included air constituent and air contaminant monitoring. The survey was conducted at various times during the week and under various conditions of weather and activities. Also, inspections of the HVAC systems were conducted to identify any buildup from dust, mold, or mildew and to identify possible malfunctions in the systems. All air contaminants were within recommended EPA/OSHA/NIOSH limits. Carbon dioxide levels were up to seven times outside levels. The maximum level measured was 1800 ppm. These levels were the result of imbalanced HVAC systems and blocked HVAC ducts. Recommendations included a full maintenance check of HVAC systems including returns and exhausts, balancing of temperature between rooms sharing an HVAC system, the inspection of all HVAC air ducts, and reporting of testing results to the building occupants. A further recommendation was to install a high flow air exhaust in the facility dark room where chemicals were stored. Follow-up testing was conducted after maintenance recommendations had been completed and carbon dioxide levels were found to be greatly reduced.
